School libraries in California receive no dedicated funding, and many low-income schools have not funded their libraries in decades. School libraries like the one we served at Dorsa Elementary school in the Alum Rock School District cannot afford to update their old and outdated collections, replace old furnishings that discourage students from staying and reading, or refresh the ambiance of the library to make it more inviting.
